The Carters are obviously Arlo's side of the family.
The Dubois are Estee's side of the family.
As you will pick up from the names, Estee's family is french. She has one sister who no surprise, she doesn't speak to. Her family still live in France but Estee moved over to England alone when she was 25. She met Arlo when he was visiting France and ended up moving back with him because she didn't get on with her family very well.
Her family were really poor in France and it wasn't until she moved to England and began to learn the language at the age of 26 (with the help of Arlo's family) that she build a huge career for herself.
